Visiting the USA June - July 2010
Wednesday, 07 July 2010

Greetings for those looking for an update on the 5 week trip back to New Mexico and beyond. This is coming; Innitially staying in the Jamez Valley and visiting the Valae Caldera off to Newcomb in the For Corners to be the guest redaer at the Library.surfice to say did 4,000 miles well 3,995 miles in one trip across Kansas to Chigago and back to Wyoming down through the Rocky Mountains national monument and White Sands  back to New Mexico. Today went via the steam train Durango to Siverton and back and wonderful time in the high country of the Colorado Rocky mountains. Pictures to come.

The first set of pictures to be posted come from a trip with Judy Griffin from Cortez across west to The Bluffs and the spectacular Twin Rocks below which was a Trading post. We saw several stone houses that you could buy from a catalogue back in the late 1800's and brought in by wagons or stage coach! (I loved travelling with locals that knew all those extra bits).  We went through the Valley of the Gods and into The Great Gooseneck park. Here the water had made great OX Bow bends and from the look out there were 3 distinct bens in view where the mighty San Juan had carved out over a long period of time. It was like looking into the Grand Canyon OOH AHH, you could just not take in the Vista in one view. I was stunned. The range of hills to the north had a definite pattern of colours which looked like the Navajo rug weaving. patterns. We went past Monument Valley and Kayenta to Red Mesa and visited a church that had been painted by a local Navajo painter with murals depicting the major bible stories from Creation to the Resurrection. Each was different with a watercolour painting of Moses with a flowing beard, to the Egyptian plagues painted on a Navajo rug design using Egyptian hieroglyphics. The crucifixion was painted in black and white with cars and in the bottom corner Navajo’s on horse back. The Noah Ark had local animals going in two by two. His last painting was of his grandfather that led him to Christ and honoured him in this way. It was truly amazing the different styles that had been used.
